MirrorMirror by Manny Castro
From Jul 6th through Aug 4th, 2007Victor Madero Gallery presents MirrorMirror, the most recent collection of large-scale paintings by New York-based painter, Manny Castro. The opening reception will take place during Coral Gables gallery night on Friday July 6th, 2007 from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. Manny Castro paints portraits of histrionic characters engaged in restrained spectacles that call the viewer to contemplate about inherent contradictions in civilization. Castro theatrically stages each painting to underscore the relationship of parallel and opposing archetypes, objects, and ideas. Castro’s utilizes his friends as “actors” for his paintings thus the true subject of the paint is detached from the actual personality of the model. Every collection Castro paints is of a theatrical production and each canvas is a snapshot of a scene within the production. Castro was born in Miami, Florida in 1981 and studied painting at the Parsons School of Design and The New York Studio School of Painting, Drawing, and Sculpture. Currently, Castro resides and works in New York City where he has received considerable attention as a young artist with fresh approaches to the long-standing medium of paint. Most notably, in 2006, Castro’s Collectors series of two dozen large scales painting were featured in installations in the windows of Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City.
