Byron Carlyle Theater. Nov 13th, 2010. 8:30 p.m.
Tigertail presents groundbreaking jazz from Holland, the celebrated saxophonist Benjamin Herman and his quartet. As part of the New Cool of the jazz scene in the Netherlands and Europe, Benjamin Herman blows away every cliché while working hard to return jazz to the dance floor, building bridges between the mainstream, improvisational jazz and the pop scene. He began his career when he received a saxophone as a bar mitzvah present.
Since then, Herman has become known as the hardest-working, sharpest-dressing and most original musician in the Netherlands. Holland’s leading alto saxophonist, Benjamin Herman is the winner of several Edison awards (the Dutch Grammys). Joining him are some of Holland’s finest players, bassist Ernst Glerum who has worked with Steve Lacy, Lee Konitz, Han Bennink and John Zorn, guitarist Anton Goudsmit with Eric Vloeimans, Tony Allen, Han Bennink, and John Zorn and is a founding member of the Ploctones, and drummer Joost Patocka who performs with the Beets, Carolyn Breuer, Ernst Glerum, Jazz Cats, and Five Up High.
This one-night only concert is presented by the non-profit Tigertail Productions, a South Florida leader in innovative cultural work. “Our goal, as always, is to showcase the best of global culture here in Miami, and this concert fits right in with that vision,” says Tigertail Executive Director Mary Luft. “This is the third year in a row that Tigertail has brought new jazz from Europe to Miami. This quartet of excellent musicians is quickly making a name for itself.”
