Miami Beach Cinematheque. Jan 14th, 2010. 8:30 p.m.
As part of the film series “Steamy Tennessee”, the Miami Beach Cinematheque presents the film The Rose Tatto on January 14th, 2010 at 8:30 p.m. The film was directed by Daniel Mann in 1955 and features Anna Magnani, Burt Lancaster and Marissa Pavan.
The Rose Tattoo is originally a Tennessee Williams play. It opened on Broadway in February 1951, and a film adaptation was released in 1955. It tells the story of an Italian-American widow in Louisiana who has allowed herself to withdraw from the world after her husband’s death, and expects her daughter to do the same.
Shot in Key West but based in the Mississippi Gulf, this is one of Tennessee Williams’ lustiest tales of love, loss, betrayal, and jealousy. Anna Magnani in her first English role, plays the emotional, insecure, domineering widow Serafina Delle Rose, whose life of drama draws her daughter into the web during her budding sexuality. Burt Lancaster plays Alvaro Mangiacavallo, the second bus driver who enters their lives.
