The Old Dillard Museum presents “The Cannonball Birthday Concert” featuring Nat Adderley Jr., nephew of legendary jazz saxophonist Julian” Cannonball” Adderley, and other great instrumentalists such as Vincent Herring, Longineu Parsons, Roy McCurdy, and Trevor Ware.
Pianist Nat Adderely , Jr. is best known for writing and arranging Luther Vandross songs, including his firsts top 20 pop hits,” Stop to Love,” “Wait for Love,” and the Grammy-nominated “Give Me the Reason.” Adderley has also written, produced and arranged songs for Beyonce Knowles, Kirk Whalum, Natalie Cole, Johnny Gill and Aretha Franklin.
Cannonball Adderley is remembered for his 1966 single “Mercy Mercy Mercy”, a crossover hit on the pop charts, and for his work with jazz great Miles Davis. Early in his career, Cannonball taught music and directed the school band at Dillard High School, Fort Lauderdale’s first school for African-American students and the current site of the Old Dillard Museum.
Nephew of legendary jazz saxophonist Julian “Cannonball” Adderley and son of renowned jazz trumpeter Nat Adderley, Sr., Nat Adderley, Jr. is best known for his work with Luther Vandross. Nat wrote and arranged Luther’s first 20 pop hit, “Stop to Love.” Other Luther songs written by Nat include “Wait for Love,” and the Grammy-nominated “Give me the Reason.” In addition to writing, producing and arranging songs for Luther and other artists, such as Beyonce Knowles, Kirk Whalum, Natalie Cole, Johnny Gill and Aretha Franklin, Nat Adderley, Jr., is a fabulous pianist.
Vincent Herring is often known as the Cannonball Clone for his amazing renditions on the alto saxophone. Herring played for many years with Nat Adderley, Sr. and it’s acclaimed as a virtuoso with his voice and his saxophone. He has also worked with Cedar Walton, Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Hayes, Art Blakey, the Horace Silver Quintet, Nancy Wilson and others.
Longineu Parsons is a native of Tallahassee. He was like a son and a protégé to Nat Adderley, Sr. Parsons, and is an internationally acclaimed trumpeter who also performs on recorders, flute, percussions and vocals. Longineu has performed in some thirty countries in North, South and Central America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. He has performed for such dignitaries as the King of Morocco, the President of Gabon, the Royal Family of the Netherlands, the President of Austria, and for UNESCO.
Roy McCurdy was the last drummer to play with Cannonball Adderley. Although he is best known for his contributions to the Cannonball Adderley Quintet between 1965 and 1975, McCurdy was a stimulating drummer for Chuck and Gap Mangione in the Jazz Brothers, Bobby Timmons, Betty Carter and Sonny Rollins.
Trevor Ware is one of the most in-demand bassists in Los Angeles. Ware is regularly featured with a number of bands, and has appeared on over 30 recordings, His film credits include the Dreamworks film release Collateral starring Tom Cruise and Jamie Fox and the CBS series Smith starring Ray Liotta.
The Cannonball Birthday Concert is the final concert in the 2012 Old Dillard Museum Cannonball Jazz Series. The series began in 2009 to honor Julian “Cannonball” Adderley’s connection to the Broward County Public School System and Dillard High School. Adderley taught music and directed the school band at the historic Dillard High School site at 1009 NW 4th Street in Fort Lauderdale between 1948 and 1950 and later taught at the current Dillard High School between 1953 and 1956.
