The Musical Style of Cuban Son at the Tower Theater

June 22nd, 2006Miami Dade College’s InterAmerican Campus will host the presentation of “The Musical Style of Cuban Son”, introducing Cuban musicologist Eduardo Blanco as part of the Two Shores Series. Blanco will discuss the origins of Cuban Son, one of the oldest cuban rhytms. He will also perform several of the most representatives pieces from this genre. Contemporary Cuban music wouldn’t exist without Son, and it is the most popular dance music genre to emerge from Cuba since the early 20th century to these days. Original from the eastern province of Oriente, Son began as an Afro-Cuban popular dance in the late 1800’s among the rural population, and it was performed with percussion alone, and believed.
