The Miami Symphony Orchestra presents An Appalachian Spring

April 6 and 7, 2013.

Concertmaster Daniel Andai guest conducts The Miami Symphony Orchestra (MISO) in a program of recognizable and beloved music, starting with Aaron Copland’s original Pulitzer Prize-winning music for his ballet, Appalachian Spring. Mozart’s “Haffner” Symphony No. 35 along with Richard Strauss’ Duet-Concertino for Clarinet and Bassoon round out the program that takes place Saturday, April 6, 8:00 p.m. at the Wertheim Performing Arts Center at FIU, and Sunday, April 7, 4:00 p.m. at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center.

Andai, founder of MISO’s Special Development Program, has performed as a soloist with MISO on multiple occasions, and has held concertmaster positions with orchestras in various countries around the world. He has performed in the sections of the New York Philharmonic and the Miyazaki Orchestra in Japan, and has been a featured guest conductor in Miami and the Bahamas. Currently he is the Marialice Shivers Endowed Chair in Fine Arts and Violin Professor at the University of Texas-Pan American, in addition to holding faculty positions at the Miami-Dade College, New World School of the Arts, and the Killington Music Festival in Vermont. He has served on the advisory board for the City of Aventura Performing Arts Center, as an Arts for Life! guest speaker, and a Miami- Dade Cultural Affairs Council grant panelist. Recognized as one of “20 under 40” from Poder magazine and The Miami Herald, Andai is a recipient of prizes from numerous music competitions worldwide.

Sharing the stage with Andai on the Strauss Duet-Concertino will be clarinetist Nuno Antunes and bassoonist Adrian Morejon Antunes held the principal clarinet position at the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas, and is currently a faculty member of the Horace Mann School in New York City and the Praxis Youth Leadership Orchestra. Morejon is a member of Sospiro Winds, Talea Ensemble, Metropolis Ensemble, the bassoon duo Dark & Stormy, as well as a faculty member of the Boston Conservatory, the Composer’s Conference at Wellesley College, and the Praxis Youth Leadership Orchestra. Both soloists are members of the IRIS Orchestra and The Gene Project, which Antunes co-created.
