The Greater Miami Youth Symphony will present a special concert of Taiwanese and Chinese symphonic works and folk melodies. The themed feature work will be the Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto, to be performed by Ms. Huifang Chen, GMYS Music Director and Symphony Orchestra Conductor. The Concerto, written in the western orchestra style and premiered in 1959, is based on an ancient Chinese legend and often performed on traditional Chinese instruments.
This concert serves as a memorial tribute to Mr. Start Shih Tza Wu, a prominent businessman and philanthropist, and showcases the highly-skilled 80+ member GMYS Symphony Orchestra comprised of middle and high school students from Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Past performances include collaborations with flutist Nestor Torres, the Dublin and Cork Youth Orchestras, pianists Meng-Chieh Liu and Kemal Gekic, the Amernet String Quartet, as well as appearances at Festival Miami and the Liszt Festival. Special guests for this concert include conductor Jeff Chih-Fang Huang, vocalist Chai Lin Chien, and harpist Deborah Fleisher.
The Butterfly Lovers Concert will take place at the University of Miami’s Maurice Gusman Concert Hall at 3:00 PM. Admission is free.
