January 2011.
The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University (FIU) will expand and enhance its impact in the community, with a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s Knight Arts Challenge. The museum will use the funds to integrate new media and technologies into exhibits. The project will enable the Frost to further its reach and engage audiences in the uplifting nature of the arts.
“With this grant, the museum will be able to connect to an even broader audiences across the world and make art even more accessible,” said Carol Damian, director and chief curator.
“Audiences want to be a part of exhibits. They want to engage with them, and curate their own experience – which this grant will help the Frost Art Museum do,” said Dennis Scholl, Knight Foundation’s vice president/arts.
The museum will build a technology infrastructure to facilitate the creation of online communities through video, podcasts, online chats, high-quality webcasts and mobile apps. Live feeds will be streamed to interactive kiosks at the museum entrance. The museum’s internal system will receive an upgrade so staff can log in from anywhere in the world.
This is the second Knight Arts Challenge award for The Frost Art Museum. The first award was received in 2008 for The Virtual Gallery, currently at the museum. The Virtual Gallery enables visitors to tour the gallery, focus on individual objects and access additional information and links. The multimedia authoring software will provide such experiences as self-curating gallery spaces using The Frost Art Museum’s Permanent Collection. This project will allow the implementation of creative technical solutions to the exhibition’s complexity and enhance the viewing and educational experience of visitors of all ages and art backgrounds.
