Based on Nathanael West’s novel, The Day of The Locust is an unflinching decrial of 1930’s Hollywood, told in grand and magnificent detail by director John Schlesinger. William Atherton is a high-minded art director who surrounds himself with eccentrics, among them flighty, shallow actress Karen Black, her has-been vaudevillian father Burgess Meredith and her caring but oafish lover Donald Sutherland. They are slowly scraping, struggling, wandering to “the top” of the Hollywood System, as they are slowly being taken down by their own greed and desperation.
