Spinello Projects and Fordistas are proud to present The Annex, an experimental non commercial arts space located at 2930 NW 7th Ave, Miami, FL 33127. This program is dedicated to offering a safe space for promising up-and-coming curators and artists based in Miami. Focusing on underrepresented and underserved communities; The Annex provides a platform and resources to realize thought provoking experiences through art. The debut project, To Love Like A Woman, is a group show curated by Michelle Lisa Polissaint. The multimedia exhibition features works by Angel Garcia, Ashley Sebok, Barbara Lamothe, King Coochie, Monica Uszerowicz, Nathalie Alfonso, Sofia Dotta, and Vickie Pierre.
Despite living as a woman without explicit social power, women show power through works and practice. Womanly love is the start and end of every movement, but the word love is trite: to love too deeply is a thing of shame and passionate love is looked at as dramatic and unnecessary. But love is a necessary choice that fuels humanity, it is a laborious and often thankless expression of care.
To Love Like A Woman looks at the ways women artists discuss love and care in their work. This is not to say how we should love or shouldn’t love, but instead how love can manifest in our work. This exhibition shows how a select group of women show love for themselves, the world, and the people around them through care.
Polissaint explains, “The choice to produce an exhibition about this show of love by women came from theconstant presence of women at the forefront of activist movements. A woman’s love is where care and social practice meet.”
