The nationally acclaimed Teatro Prometeo at Miami Dade College (MDC) will soon blow out candles in a star-studded birthday event, marking 40 years of theatrical excellence history as the only Spanish-language conservatory in the country. Past students of the theater who have gone on to have successful careers in film, theatre and television, both nationally and internationally, will be part of this milestone fête, including actors Vivian Ruiz and Marilyn Romero, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and MDC alumnus Nilo Cruz, Mario Ernesto Sanchez, actor and director of the International Hispanic Theatre Festival and Alina Interián, senior executive director of cultural affairs at Miami Dade College.
This important milestone of Teatro Prometeo, started by Cuban actress Teresa Maria Rojas and MDC President Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón, will be celebrated in a commemorative edition of Pagina Abierta, a television program on MDC-TV that highlights Hispanic artists with a live studio audience. There will also be a photo retrospective by Asela Torres, who has been documenting Hispanic theater for the last five decades and will bring to life the important history of Teatro Prometeo through her images.
The event will take place at 7 p.m., on Wednesday, November 13th, with a special celebratory reception to follow.
Since raising its curtain for the first time in 1973 at MDC’s downtown Miami Wolfson Campus, Teatro Prometeo has stolen the spotlight with many creative productions, including Guaracha Rock, Electra Garrigo, El Laberinto, Cordero de Dios, Sabrina y Lucrecia, El retablo de las maravillas, Fango Negro, Los cuentos de René, Filo al fuego, Mujeres de Shakespeare and Cyrano Mio.
Teatro Prometeo continues to remain a true cultural catalyst and treasure, having produced and presented more than one-hundred productions, as well as educating thousands of actors and contributing to the transformation of the Spanish theater scene in the country. Under the artistic direction of Joann Maria Yarrow, Prometeo is nationally recognized as the only Spanish-language theater conservatory within an academic institution in the country, and has showcased Miami’s diverse talent throughout Latin America and the U.S.
The Conservatory in Theatre Arts program offers a rigorous, well-rounded curriculum in acting, voice, history of Latin American theatre, dance, acting for the camera and other disciplines, including master workshops in neutral mask, acrobatic stilt performance, Rasa boxes, and stage combat, among others. All this and more will take center stage at the anniversary celebration.
