According to the Wikipedia, “the term outsider art was coined by art critic Roger Cardinal in 1972 as an English synonym for art brut (French) ‘raw art’ or ‘rough art’, a label created by French artist Jean Dubuffet to describe art created outside the boundaries of official culture; Dubuffet focused particularly on art by insane-asylum inmates.

From July 14 through 26, 2012. Atelier 1022 presents 3-D ArtVergnügen! II, its second annual exhibit of 3-D photography and the history of 3-D viewing. 3-D ArtVergnügen! II features a selection of both new (color and infrared) and old (black and white) photographs called stereocards or stereoviews.

From June 7 through July 31, 2012. The works in the exhibition Lynne Golob Gelfman: Sand at Alejandra von Hartz Gallery refer to landscape but do not represent it. Rather they evoke a sense of place. Sand in its many permutations has engaged Gelfman for years in her process of making abstract paintings.

From June 9 through July 24, 2012. David Castillo Gallery is currently presenting the exhibition DCG Open, a yearly survey of artists from South Florida. This year’s curator Brandi Reddick, Artists and Communications Manager for the Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places Program & Curator of the Miami-Dade Public Art Collection, has chosen nineteen artists from the region.

Emilio Héctor Rodriguez and Pedro HernándezFrom May 19 through June 15, 2012. In this collaboration, the ethereal, biomorphic compositions of painter Emilio Héctor Rodriguez, are set in counterpoint to the sensual tactile explorations of sculptor Pedro Hernández Dominguez; two creative sensibilities in search of the pleasure and mystery in the realm of the senses and the language of visual poetry.

Through June 9, 2012. “Today decoration epitomizes this transformation of object into system. The world has been remade into sign, into decor. That is to say, that decor lies at the crux of the dizzying traffic between industrial processes and digital codes, between the production of tangible goods and streams of information.”

From May 12 through July 11, 2012. “Art for Global Peace” is a collection of works of early paintings and drawings by Roberto Juarez. The artist has created artworks in the United States and Europe, and has borrowed various regional influences for his work. Some works included in the exhibition were created while living in Miami in the late 1990’s.

May 16, 2012. 7:00 p.m. Gallery Diet is pleased to present Good Tool, a one-time performance by Aki Sasamoto. This is the artist’s first performance at the gallery.

From April 27 through June 10th, 2012. Carol Jazzar Contemporary Art presents “sometimes all of me is not enough”, an exhibition of drawings and mixed media collages by artist Shoshanna Weinberger. This will be her first solo exhibit at the gallery.
