This exhilarating new documentary from acclaimed German director Wim Wenders (Wings of Desire; Paris,Texas) captures the brilliantly inventive dance world of legendary choreographer Pina Bausch, who died in the summer of 2009. Featuring her groundbreaking and inspiring dance-theater productions, Wenders takes the audience on a sensual, visually stunning journey that dramatically employs the 3D medium in new and exciting ways. Pina has just been nominated for Best Documentary Film for the 84th Academy Awards, and will open on Friday, February 17th and will play seven days a week. It is rated PG, and in German and other languages with English subtitles.
“Dance, dance, or we are lost,” said Pina Bausch, and these words summarize her life and provide the inspiration for director Wim Wenders’ breathtaking tribute to the legendary choreographer. Bausch and her Tanztheater Wuppertal elevated dance into subversive new expressive realms, and in this remarkable film Wenders captures the raw, heart-stopping intensity of the movement – his use of 3D turns dance into a transcendent cinematic experience. An official selection of the Berlinale, Telluride, Toronto and New York film festivals, and now Germany’s official entry for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, Pina features interviews with and performances by Bausch’s beloved original company members, and offers an indelible image of an artist who went the full distance in her uncommonly rich creative life. Variety says, “Offering further proof that the latest 3D technology is good for a lot more than just lunging knives and fantastical storylines, Wim Wenders’ dance docu Pina reps multidimensional entertainment that will send culture vultures swooning.”
An Opening Night Red Carpet Event for Pina will take place on Friday, February 17, with screenings at 7:00 and 10:00 pm. Miami-based Octavio Campos and dancers will perform a short piece in homage to Pina Bausch at the start of each screening, and German Consul General Eva Alexandra Countess Kendeffy will introduce the film, for which the German Consulate is a co-sponsor. Between the two screenings, a reception for ticket holders will take place from 9:00 to 10:00 pm on the Cinema’s outdoor plaza.
In addition, on Sunday, February 19 at 4:00 pm, there will be a free, open-to-the-public panel discussion, “Dance to Live: Pina Bausch and the Dance-Theater Movement,” at the Cinema. The panel’s participants include moderator Celeste Fraser-Delgado, professor at Barry University and Editorial Director of ArtBurst.com, Miami’s “media bureau” for dance; and others to be announced. The conversation will continue after the screening at the Cinema’s very own Cafe.
