South Florida Ballet Theater presents La Fille Mal Gardee

May 13th, 2006The South Florida Premier of La Fille Mal Gardee will be showcased this May at the Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center. This renowned European ballet was fist presented more than 200 years ago at the Grand Theatre Bordeaux on July 1st, 1789, the eve of the French Revolution. Originally set in the French countryside, the ballet was created and staged rather hurriedly, by Jean Dauberval, one of the foremost choreographers of his days. In 1791 Dauberval presented it again at the Pantheon Theatre in London. The original inspiration for the ballet came from an engraving taken from P.A. Baudoin’s painting The Servant. Unlike most ballets, the libretto is based on ordinary everyday people of their time. It was very soon being performed in theaters all over Europe. It entered the repertory of the Paris Opera in 1828, being produced by their ballet-master Jean-Pierre Amuer with the revised score of composer Ferdinand Herold, who composed a considerable amount of new music. Now the masterpieces of the Royal Ballet’s repertory recreated by Sr. Frederick Ashton, La Fille Mal Gardee opened at Covent Garden on January 28th, 1960 and reset in the English countryside telling how Lise manages to win the hand of Colas-despite her mother’s determination to marry her of to the dim-witted son of a wealthy vineyard owner. This ballet is complete with farm animals as the famous rooster and chicken dance.
