South Beach Animation Festival believes the only thing better than having one animation legend attending this festival is having yet another one honors us with his presence and enormous talent. The festival has announced the participation of John Canemaker as a guest of honor alongside animation legend Bill Plympton’s. "We are delighted to welcome animators of this talent and expertise to our festival only in it’s second year. " said festival founder Noreen Legault.
John Canemaker is an independent animator and animation historian whose creative work has won international honors. His Academy Award-winning film, The Moon and the Son: An Imagined Conversation (2004) marks a personal and professional breakthrough in its treatment of a troubled father/son relationship, based on his own life. Canemaker’s personal films are noteworthy for their striking visual style and classic animation. They are in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, and have been released on video under the title John Canemaker: Marching to a Different Toon (Milestone/Image Entertainment).
He recently co-produced and directed animation sequences for Chuck Jones: Memories of Childhood, a 26-minute documentary that premieres on Turner Classic Movies on March 24, 2009 at 8:00pm ET.
Bill Plympton's brilliant career is sure to enlighten festival attendees. His short films have been seen widely around the country, highlighting many animation festivals. In 1987 he was nominated for an Oscar® for his short "Your Face". In 2005, Bill's received another Oscar® nomination, this time for a short film "Guard Dog". Ranging from creating cartoons for publications such as New York Times, National Lampoon, Playboy and Screw as well as producing many shorts that appeared on MTV and Spike and Mike's, and recently turning his talent to features.
Since 1991 he's made 9 feature films, 6 of them, "The Tune", "Mondo Plympton", "I Married A Strange Person", "Mutant Aliens", "Hair High" and "Idiots and Angels" animated features. In 2005, Bill's received another Oscar® nomination, this time for a short film "Guard Dog".
The South Beach Animation Festival will take place at the Miami Beach Cinematheque in the heart of Miami Beach. More than a showcase of outstanding animation from all over the world, festival organizers are mounting a series of workshops and hands-on demonstrations by animators and industry professionals. The public will learn how animation is made and filmmakers, of all levels, will gain knowledge of animation techniques taught in workshops by the Masters John Canemaker and Bill Plympton.
“There will be something for everyone,” says festival founder Noreen Legault. “When you think of the full spectrum of media technology available to us, animation is probably the most pervasive and innovative art form today. Some of Hollywood’s tops grossing movies are animated films drawing in A List movie stars doing the voices of the characters.” Deadline for entries is February 20th, 2009
