Buena Vista: A Photographic Exposition Seeking To Portray One of Miami’s Most Diverse and Historically Rich Areas

The Archbishop Curley Notre Dame Gallery’s first exhibit of the new season will feature a selection of photographic works from Simon Hare’s new project “East of 95” – Miami’s historic Buena Vista area next to the Design District.
Opening reception will be held on Saturday, September 11th, 2010 from 7:00 – 11:00 p.m. and the exhibition will continue throughout the end of October. Hare’s project seeks to portray one of Miami’s most diverse and historically rich areas, the neighborhoods surrounding Biscayne Boulevard north of downtown Miami, at a moment of critical change. It is a portrait, taken one person at a time, of a spicy, bubbling human cauldron before it becomes a bland suburban soup.
Photographer Simon Hare has lived in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Europe, Australia, Chicago and San Francisco. But it wasn’t until he moved into Buena Vista East in 1997, a historic neighborhood next to the Design District, that he was inspired to take pictures of the people around him. He was compelled by “a sky so blue it makes your eyes water, and people who overflow with color and texture. People’s emotions boil over here.” In a tiny neighborhood that is like a small town in the middle of the city, Hare has created portraits of an eccentric global family, of people who exude personality in a corner of the world that accepts them. Simon Hare is a respected commercial photographer in New York, Miami, and Los Angeles.
Artist Mark T. Smith will curate the exhibit. Born in Wilmington, Delaware, he moved to New York City in 1986 to study at the Pratt Institute. After matriculating from Pratt, he stayed in New York City and became known as an iconoclastic artist producing highly recognizable paintings. At 22 years of age, he exploded into the art scene acquiring a commission to create the nationally distributed poster celebrating Walt Disney World’s 19th birthday. Mark has had 15 major solo exhibitions and 21 group exhibitions throughout the United States and the United Arab Emirates. He now lives and works in Miami. As curator for Simon Hare’s project, Mark’s will add artistic and urban-edge insightfulness to this exhibition.
“East of 95” and future exhibits at the ACND Gallery of Art will provide opportunities for educational enrichment through the promotion of thought and discussion. The gallery is offered as an expression of solidarity with its neighbors in the historic Buena Vista, Brentwood and Little Haiti sections of the upper east side of Miami including the recently developed areas surrounding the Arsht Center for the Performing Arts and the Design District.
The ACND Gallery of Art is located on the campus of Archbishop Curley Notre Dame High School in the 6-7-8 Brother Rice Academy building, 4949 NE 2nd Avenue, Miami, FL 33137.
