Meet Tony Montana (Oscar-winner Al Pacino), a Cuban refugee newly arrived in Miami courtesy of the Mariel boatlift. Together with friend Manny Ribera (Steven Bauer), Tony turns to criminal acts to make ends meet. As they dive into the world of cocaine, their graphically violent criminal enterprise quickly grows, as does Tony’s insatiable appetite for drugs, money, power, and the woman he can’t have. Roger Ebert notes, “Scarface is one of those special movies, like The Godfather, that is willing to take a flawed, evil man and allow him to be human.” The film’s downward spiral of self-destruction and excess still resonates 35 years later.
