There are many collections of ‘outsider art’ but few are nonprofit institutional collections like NAEMI with a perspective of the various manifestations of contemporary art that holds the collection. Among its more than thousand pieces are a variety of techniques related to contemporary art, which now include photography.
Art of individuals recovering from mental illnesses rarely appears in the news, even less in the art news. Censorship, silence and perennial ostracism join the self-censorship that outsider artists impose themselves. It is precisely in spaces like Visionaries of the Light where both “worlds” meet, giving us a glimpse of the metaphysical realms these artists produce and giving their work an opportunity to live in the parallel universe of reality, but still true to the subversive impulse contained within outsider art.
“This exhibition gathers a collection of works where the artists address everyday life, pain, death, and hope. As expected, each author has appropriated reality to distort it and to build up a particular vision that results in a magical creation and that it is somehow their only liberating resource.” Juan Martin Executive Director of NAEMI.
The exhibition is an ongoing collaboration between NAEMI and the SaludArte Foundation and is part of a cycle of Outsider Art that SaludArte Foundation has prepared for the months of October through January 2017.
