On Sunday, February 13, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Jewish Museum of Florida, Ron Ruthfield will discuss his book, The Capital Underground. This program is free to members and free with museum admission.
Ron Ruthfield has brought his own unique perspective to The Capital Underground, having lived in South Florida during the days when the use of marijuana and cocaine became recreational and permanent habits. During Miami’s Cocaine Cowboy era of the 1970s and 1980s, he saw up-close and quite personally how the drug trade became the necessary evil that made South Florida an economic powerhouse and a major player in the world’s economy.
Ron moved to Miami Beach in 1947. He attended South Beach Elementary School, graduated Miami Beach High in 1958, and graduated from the University of Miami. He attended Hebrew School and services at Congregation Beth Jacob that is now the Jewish Museum of Florida. Ron’s time as a television reporter in South Florida and a newsman for the nation’s leading wire service, gives him a particularly incisive view of the rapid growth of drug smuggling, America’s prison system, and international money-laundering. Mr. Ruthfield has developed contacts on both sides of the law, including those who reaped enormous financial benefits, those who wished they had, and those who hunted them. The Capital Underground is Mr. Ruthfield’s first novel, one that brings his personal and professional experiences to a wide audience of readers. He and his wife make their home in Boone, North Carolina.
