Glitz, glamour and celebrity are the themes at this year’s long standing community event, as guests and their puppets will take center stage Sunday, January 27 from 11 am until 4 pm. The “pupperazi” will greet guest as they walk the red carpet; strolling characters weave throughout the event; kids can bring their own puppets to sing in puppet karaoke; enjoy make and takes, rides, DJ games and more. Kids are encouraged to be part of the glamour by coming in costume or bringing their puppets.
“PuppetFest is such a hit every year with families because it combines traditional carnival type entertainment like rides and facepainting, with specialty activities like puppet shows and strolling puppeteers,” according to Stacee Lanz, Special Event Coordinator. “This year Sugar Sand Park celebrates a milestone – ten years of puppetry in the park, which led us to the Red Carpet Razzle Dazzle theme,” she added.
Mr. Brian and the Boppets, interactive puppet theatre, which combines original live music and puppetry in this rock concert for kids, will be in the Willow Theatre. Shows are at 10:30 am, 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children under 12, advance purchase is strongly recommended.
Other live shows during the day include The Amazing Mr. A, who performs comedy puppetry and ventriloquism; and PuppetTiki Wacky Game Show, an improvisational format presented by Puppet Network. Tickets for these shows, as well as other activities, can be purchased on site only the day of the event.
In addition to the children’s event, the Willow Theatre will present and Untamed, Unshackled, Unhinged: An Evening of Adult Puppetry on Friday, January 25 at 8:00pm. The audience should leave what they know about cute little puppets at home, along with the kids, for this R rated show featuring a variety of acts from South Florida and beyond the area. Funny and irreverent, topical and political, puppets will be seen in whole new light.
