Preview Benefit Performance of "Hamlet" to Benefit New World School of the Arts

GableStage at the Biltmore. January 11, 2013. 8:00 p.m.

GableStage at the Biltmore presents a Preview Benefit Performance of Hamlet to benefit the theater division of New World School of the Arts. Directed and adapted for London’s Royal Shakespeare Company by NWSA theater alumnus Tarell Alvin McCraney, the American premiere is a 90-minute high-energy version of the most powerful and important tragedy in the English Language.

Award-winning playwright Tarell McCraney assured us that “Shakespeare’s plays aren’t meant to be ‘read’, for understanding they are meant to be played. And the best place for that to happen is live. If you or I were not here that moment would not have happened. That cannot be duplicated. Our students deserve the chance to play Shakespeare. Not just read it.”

The cast, which includes Alana Arenas, Mimi Davila, Ryan George, Peter Haig, Arielle Hoffman, Dylan Kammerer, Edgar Sanchez, and Bruce Lecure, also features NWSA college acting juniors Jose Alfredo Ramirez, Michael Napoles, and Laura De Lorenzo, as well as NWSA theater faculty James Randolph.

“This event is one of the most exciting theater productions to see this season. After the successful run of the The Brothers Size, Tarell continues to be committed to bring quality productions and performances to South Florida,” commented Patrice Bailey, dean of theater at NWSA during a recent rehearsal session at New World School of the Arts. “In addition, Tarell has brought back to Miami, Alana Arenas, who is also a NewWorld alumnus and an ensemble member of the prestigious Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago to appear in this production. The theater division is very proud of our alumni who continue to give back to the school and to the theater community while they pursue successful careers.”

General admission is $35. Tickets can be purchased online at nwsa.mdc.edu. GableStage will donate 100% of the proceeds to the New World School of the Arts theater division.

Regular performances of Shakespeare’s Hamlet at GableStage take place from January 12 through February 10, 2013.
