From Feb 17th through 28th, 2010.
The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County presents Platanos and Collard Greens, the award-winning, multicultural comedy that has enchanted sold-out audiences around the country, at the Carnival Studio Theater in the Ziff Ballet Opera House from February 17th through 28th, 2010, weeknights at 7:30 p.m. and weekends at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Platanos and Collard Greens is a thought-provoking romantic comedy that addresses stereotypes, prejudices, and urban myths, all within the context of humor and satire. Much like a modern day West Side Story, the play tells the story of two college students: Freeman, an African-American man, and Angelita, a Latina woman, both forced to confront cultural and racial barriers while defending their romantic bond from the biases held by family and friends. In December 2008, Platanos and Collard Greens was honored with a special award for Excellence in Black Theater by AUDELCO, often described as the Black Tony Award.
“Platanos and Collard Greens, a play that spotlights love as a bridge between cultures, will feel right at home in Miami’s cultural melting pot, where the actors and audience will fit perfectly together,” said M. John Richard, President and CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center. “Much like the play, Miami has set an example of celebrating diversity, and I know South Florida will enjoy this refreshing modern comedy, which seems tailor-made for our city.”
Now celebrating its sixth year of production, Platanos and Collard Greens is the longest running Black and Latino off-Broadway play. In 2003, the play premiered to sold-out audiences in New York City. The work was so successful and audience demand so strong, that the production has now moved to a theater with quadruple the audience capacity. Platanos and Collard Greens also has a major college following, and has completed several national collegiate tours, performing for over 200 colleges and universities in more than 20 states around the country. Platanos and Collard Greens speaks to multiple cultures, ages, and backgrounds, reflecting a universal vision of family, love, and life. This is a work that will make you laugh, inspire you, and make you think!
