At Undercurrent Arts From Feb 10th through Mar 24th, 2007Undercurrent Arts Gallery, located in Wynwood Art District is presenting the exhibition Out of the Ashes with an opening reception to take place on February 10th, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. The image of the phoenix rising from the ashes has long been a symbol of transformation. It is the idea of not only having lived through devastation and destruction, but also being able to rise above it. This exhibition explores tragedies of past and present and questions if humans can move beyond them. Jane Fulton Alt’s encaustic covered photographs search for light in the dark recesses of the Nazi concentration camps and the slave forts of Africa, while Joy Garnett’s paintings magnify the media’s portrayal of events in the Middle East. Karrie Hovey’s intricate installation commemorates the American casualties in Iraq and Margaret Kosyk’s sculptures portray struggles of home and abroad; and John Zoller’s paintings play with the American ideal.
