The New Presbyterian Church. Sept 26th, 2010. 2:00 p.m.
At 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 26th, South Florida will bid adieu to its rising operatic star, Philip Alongi, as he returns to his birth city of New York to launch his professional career after four years of formal study here. The New Presbyterian Church (TNPC) presents Mr. Alongi in a special concert entitled “Farewell For Now…” as a show of appreciation for his service in their music ministry since the church’s inception. The concert is located at Pompano Beach High School. The concert will feature an array of sacred and secular works including Italian operatic arias, Neapolitan songs and sacred music spanning from the 17th century to present day. Admission is free of charge. An offering will be taken. The public is cordially invited to attend.
“We have been blessed with Phil’s talent and it has been a delight to watch him develop during his four years in Florida. There is no doubt that he is headed toward a major operatic career,” said Dr. John Wilson, Director of Music Ministries at TNPC.
Philip Alongi is an exciting young tenor who has performed over a dozen operatic roles, including leading roles in Tosca, La Traviata, Il Tabarro, and Pagliacci. He has appeared several times on national television, twice performing live on the Today show from NBC studios in New York. He was bestowed the honor of being asked to sing the funeral mass of Tim Russert as well as the televised memorial service at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. In addition, Mr. Alongi sang the national anthem at the Republican National Convention in September 2008 in Minneapolis. He recently recorded five songs with internationally acclaimed organist Diane Bish for broadcast on her internationally syndicated show, The Joy of Music.
At the concert, available for sale for the first time will be CDs of Mr. Alongi’s debut albums “Heritage” and “New Life.” A representation of his Italian-American roots, “Heritage” is a collection of Italian operatic arias and Neapolitan songs that range from the most well known works to rare, seldom-heard pieces. “New Life” is compiled of sacred works of his Christian faith and includes compositions spanning from the 17th century to present day. The CDs will be available after the concert through his website at www.philipalongi.com or as a digital download on iTunes, Amazon MP3, Rhapsody, and all other major online distributors.
“Farewell For Now” is the kickoff concert to The New Presbyterian Church 2010-2011 Concert Series. The season continues with “The Wilson Family Concert” on October 24th, Handel’s Messiah presented with full orchestra, soloists, and Concert Choir on December 19th, “A Patriotic Spectacular” on February 27th with The King’s Brass and Concert Choir, and an organ concert by renowned organist Samuel Metzger on April 3rd.
