The NWSA Symphony Orchestra will present Rienzi Overture, by Richard Wagner and Sergei Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 while Glenn Dicterow will perform Samuel Barber’s beloved violin concerto. Commissioned in 1939 for a fellow Curtis graduate, Samuel Barber began composing his violin concerto in Switzerland, completing the first two movements. Interrupted by World War II and forced back to the States, he finalized the third movement in the Pocono Mountains. The soloist, disappointed with the third movement in comparison to the other two, forewent claim to the works premier and Barber unapologetically had the work premiered by another violinist later that year to critical acclaim. Within two years, the concerto entered the standard violin repertoire.
“Glenn Dicterow’s visit to New World School of the Arts brings a unique and unparalleled level of violin mastery to the NWSA students and the community,” said Dr. Daniel Andai, dean of music at New World School of the Arts. “Mr. Dicterow will perform alongside the students of the NWSA Symphony Orchestra at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts as well as share his life-long musical experiences as a soloist, ensemble musician, recording artist and educator, in a lecture and master class format for NWSA’s Make Art Work Series.”
GLENN DICTEROW has established himself worldwide as one of the most prominent American concert artists of his generation. Having appeared as soloist with orchestras, recitalist and chamber musician from coast to coast, he retired as concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic at the end of the 2014 season having held that title for 34 years. He is the longest serving concertmaster in the orchestra’s history. Dicterow has performed with numerous orchestra worldwide, is a winner of top international competitions, and can be heard in the violin solos of the film scores for The Turning Point, The untouchables, Altered States, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and Interview with the Vampire, among others. He serves on the faculty of The Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music, the Music Academy of the West, and became the first to hold the Robert Mann Chair in Strings and Chamber Music at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music.
MAKE ART WORK [MAW] In its fifth year, MAW is designed to bring professionals in the art world together with students and the community for a dialogue on the business of art. The series will focus on providing tools, guidance and strategies for success to the next generation of artists and will expand understanding of what it takes to live as an artist in the twenty-first century. Each talk includes a question and answer session, allowing students and the public opportunities for direct communication with leaders in the art world.
