$ 90,000 Grant from Knight Foundation. January 2009. New World School of the Arts ranks among the 31 recipients of the Knight Foundation Arts Partnership grant. The Visual Arts Division will utilize these funds to create ArtSeen, a space that will be used for student-work studios and exhibitions.
With limited studio and performance area in its current building, ArtSeen will provide New World School of the Arts College students with additional space to create and showcase their work. The area will host workshops, art exhibitions, performances, lectures and mentoring programs free and open to the South Florida community.
Dr. Mercedes A. Quiroga, Provost of New World School of the Arts said, "As an arts leader it is our responsibility to engage the community and showcase the artistic readiness of our students. By having a venue outside of our school, we hope to connect with our diverse market in a much more intimate and personal manner."
"This initiative will enhance our student’s artistic experience by giving them the opportunity to work with other artists from our community," concluded Maggy Cuesta, Dean of Visual Arts at NWSA.
The ArtSeen space, located in the Wynwood District, will be accessible to NWSA students and to local artists, the public and the international arts community. The building will house a gallery space to hold monthly exhibitions, performances and lectures free and open to the public.
The Knight Foundation Arts Partnership is a five-year, $40 million initiative to transform the South Florida arts. The effort includes endowment grants to leading arts institutions, plus a community-wide contest to fund the best arts ideas.
