Urban Legends. From Sep 26th through Nov 26th, 2008. New River Fine Art is opening this fall the exhibition Urban Legends: A Retrospective of the Artwork of Thornton Dial and Purvis Young on September 26th, 2008. The show features artwork by two of America’s top Contemporary African American Artists.
“Thornton Dial and Purvis Young are two of the top Artists working today and are leaders in a School of Art that has many names – from “self taught” to “urban expressionism”. The fact is, they are unique individuals and have created styles all their own”, states Lisa Tenaglia, President of New River Fine Art. “Purvis Young was born in Miami’s Liberty City, lives in Overtown and is a hometown hero.
Thornton Dial is internationally renowned artistic genius raised in rural Alabama whose formal schooling went only to third grade. Mr. Dial and Mr. Young first exhibited together in 1996 in Atlanta at the groundbreaking “Souls Grown Deep – African American Vernacular Art. Today, their work is in hundreds of museums, important private and corporate collections worldwide. They create art that expresses the struggles of impoverished and oppressed people and provides strikingly intuitive political and social commentary. Their works speak of hope and overcoming adversity through struggle and unyielding spirit.”
