From May 14th through Jun 8th, 2009. Carol Jazzar Contemporary Art is presenting the show New Abstraction, an exhibit of new abstract paintings rooted in gesture, space and the qualities of the paint. The exhibition features works by Eve Aschheim, Chris Fennell, Lynne Golob Gelfman, Christian Haub, Rory MacArthur, Cordy Ryman and Leslie Wayne.
Abstraction exists today in many forms. It is alive and well and, more than ever, it is refreshingly challenging. Like a breathtaking revelation, this show explores surprising and enlightening ways to understand and rethink contemporary abstraction. The artists presented here vary in age and nationality and come together to form an enriching, diverse experience.
On view are small-scale works in a variety of media that synthesize a complex range of references as diverse as water, geometry and urban landscapes. The various experimentations with paint application, surface quality, and the intuitive development of shapes plumb the visual tension between distortion and disguise and give the impression of being utterly spontaneous.
This exhibition of colorful, high-contrast tableaux, spatial rhythms and collage motifs is in keeping with the gallery’s current trend for thematic exhibitions that take as their point of departure prescient genres throughout the history of art.
