Mar 4th, 2006Ars Flores is proud to present an evening concert on Saturday, March 4th, 2006 featuring Grammy-award winner, jazz flutist Nestor Torres at Miami Dade College-North Campus. The concert program will feature both classical orchestral repertoire as well as popular Latin style jazz. Although known primarily as a jazz/Latin flutist, Nestor Torres has also studied and performed classical music. He has performed with various orchestras throughout his career. In addition to performing, Mr. Torres is very interested in the development of education and culture. His interest in the growth of young musicians will offer Ars Flores fellows an unforgettable professional and artistic experience. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Torres and his family moved to New York when he 18 years old. In New York, he studied jazz and classical flute at Mannes School of Music as well as The New England Conservatory in Boston. During this time he discovered the “Charanga” style of Cuban dance music in the Latin dance clubs of New York. The combination, of Torres’ classical technique with Latin influences, resulted in his unique musical style. His infectious hybrid of exotic rhythms and catchy themes have been captivating audiences around the world ever since. After moving to Miami in 1981, he began recording and released a successful album. His good fortune changed in 1991when he lost his recording contract, following a near fatal boating accident. During the painful process of recovery from 18 broken ribs, a collapsed lung and two broken clavicles he became a devout Buddhist. Torres attributes his success and recovery to the spirit he has learned through this practice. During the next nine years Torres teamed up with various artists including famous Cuban bassist, Cachao, and Gloria Estefan. He has developed a faithful following captivated by his sensual and romantic mix of Latin, jazz and pop. In 2000, Torres received a nomination for a Latin Grammy. In 2001, he received a Grammy for Best Latin Pop Instrumental album. He has continued to record and play in the Miami area and throughout the country.
