Lieutenant Pinkerton, an American Navy officer, opportunistically engages a marriage broker to find him a house and a wife. A 15-year-old young Geisha, named Butterfly is introduced to him. She falls immediately in love with Pinkerton, converts to Christianity and banishes her relatives from her life. After a typical marriage, Pinkerton departs and promises, untruly, to return “when the robins nest again.” In the meantime, Butterfly has a child she names Dolore – meaning Pain. Three years pass and Pinkerton returns to Nagasaki with his American wife who intends to recuperate the child. Pinkerton realizes the damage done to Butterfly but is too late. Lonely, Butterfly kills herself in order to “die with honor”.
