L’amico Fritz is an opera in three acts by Pietro Mascagni, premiered in 1891 from a libretto by P. Suardon (Nicola Daspuro) (with additions by Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti), based on the French novel L’ami Fritz by Émile Erckmann and Pierre-Alexandre Chatrian.
The simple story concerns the wealthy bachelor, Fritz, who lives on his estate in Alsace. His friend, the matchmaking Rabbi David bets that one day Fritz will marry. Affirming that he will never wed, Fritz confidently accepts the Rabbi’s bet offering his farm if he loses. With David’s simple scheming, Fritz falls in love with Suzel, the daughter of one of his tenants, and asks for her hand.
This is an opera for everyone moved by unexpected love. It is a work that is often neglected in America, so this opportunity is a rare one. L’Amico Fritz is a particularly good opera to use as an introduction to newcomers of all generations.
