Girl’s Club Collection. January 2010.
Girls’ Club, a non-profit alternative space exhibiting contemporary art by women, will mount its first solo exhibition by a South Florida artist, thanks to a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s Knight Arts Challenge. One of twenty Knight Arts Challenge winners emerging from 1,562 applications, Girls’ Club received $10,000 to produce a site-specific exhibition of new works titled “Paintings” by Miami artist Frances Trombly.
“Paintings” consists of hand-woven canvases and gallery seating designed by Trombly and will open in Fall 2010 at Girls’ Club exhibition space in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Accompanying the exhibition will be a limited edition artist’s book with a hand-woven cover by Trombly and handmade inside “pages”.
Consistent with Girls’ Club’s mission of nurturing the careers of dynamic women artists, “Paintings” will be instrumental in achieving greater national and international recognition for Trombly.
“We’re thrilled to be able to showcase challenging new work by a local artist in the context of our collection. We knew immediately that Frances Trombly was the artist we wanted to feature in our first solo exhibition,” said Girls’ Club Founder Francie Bishop Good.
Trombly’s works, made with traditional needlework techniques such as weaving, crochet and embroidery, question prevailing conceptions about the value of art objects and how their meaning is determined in varying contexts. Her previous exhibitions have included facsimiles of everyday items such as supermarket receipts, trashcan liners and garden hoses.
