“Richard Blanco is not just a poet from Miami; he’s a Miami poet. Robert Frost only lived in New England for a small portion of his life, but when he wrote out came birches, apples, snow. Blanco lives in Maine in now, but whenever he puts pen to paper, out comes mangroves, abuelas, mangos. His story is Miami’s story: born abroad with two cultures and two languages, he has invented himself out of the beautiful collision of his circumstances. His voice is both old and new; it maps where the waters of histories reach the shore of now. He’s not afraid to be silly or sentimental, and like the local headlines in The Miami Herald, his poems are sometimes hilarious, sometimes deeply sad. If in them we Miamians appear flawed as well as divine, it’s only because Blanco is holding the mirror as steady as he can. And if his poems end in a multiplicity of ambiguities, it’s only because in Miami there are no choices, opposites, or conclusions, only more, more, more.” – P. Scott Cunningham
On Friday, Richard reads for us, in his hometown. And this April 28, 2013, he’ll return as part of the O, Miami Poetry Festival to read alongside another native son, rock legend Thurston Moore, at the New World Center on Miami Beach. It’s not a choice. Just more, more, more.
The event will be followed by a book signing with Richard. Books & Books will have a selection of his titles available for purchase in the lobby. This event is free, but First-Access Passes are required. Click Here for Tickets or call 305.949.6722 today.
Patrons who do not reserve their passes can join the stand-by line beginning at 6:30 p.m. outside the theater. Passes expire at 7:15 p.m. At that time, patrons in the stand-by line will be let into the theater if seats are still available.
