Books and Books Coral Gables. September 13th, 2007. 8:00 p.m.
Books and Books Coral Gables, in collaboration with the Florida Center for the Literary Arts at Miami Dade College, presents a reading and discussion with author Junot Diaz on his most recent book The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. Díaz immerses us in the tumultuous life of Oscar and the history of the family at large, rendering with genuine warmth and dazzling energy, humor, and insight the Dominican-American experience, and, ultimately, the endless human capacity to persevere in the face of heartbreak and loss. A true literary triumph, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao confirms Junot Díaz as one of the best and most exciting voices of our time. Junot Díaz, author of Drown, was born and raised in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic. In the past he has worked as a dishwasher, a pool table deliverer, a steelworker, and an editorial assistant. He received his BA from Rutgers University and an MFA in Creative Writing from Cornell. Díaz's first two short stories appeared in Story magazine, and his subsequent two stories were published in The New Yorker. In January 1996, Newsweek named Diaz one of "the new faces of 1996," the only writer to be highlighted in the article.
