An Exhibition by Jean Marc Calvet. From March 9 through April 28, 2012.
Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Art Gallery System, in collaboration with Monkdogz Urban Art Gallery, the Americas Collection, and the Miami International Film Festival, presents Jean Marc Calvet’s exhibition, invasion invasión l’invasion at its National Historic Landmark Freedom Tower. A lecture presented by Calvet takes place Friday, March 9, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. The exhibition and lecture are free and open to the public.
Featuring 33 large-scale paintings and an installation of miniature sculptures, invasion invasión l’invasion, is Calvet’s first solo exhibition at the Freedom Tower. A legitimate self-taught artist, his work and passion as an artist are marked by sophistication, yet maintain the spirit of the true brut style. Based in Granada, Nicaragua, Calvet has exhibited his work in Europe, the United States and South America, including several solo shows in New York and Nicaragua. His work is held in several private collections and museums.
The exhibition opens during the college’s Miami International Film Festival, which is presenting a related documentary, Calvet, based on his remarkable story. Before he had any thought of being an artist, Calvet was a bodyguard to the stars in Cannes. Living by impulse, he became disconnected from his family and young son, fell in with a Miami mobster and wound up hiding out in Nicaragua in a drug-fueled haze. At the age of 38, he started to paint as a form of recovery. That was seven years ago. Director Dominic Allan and Jean Marc Calvet bring to the big screen a film about struggling for a second chance.
The opening screening and Directors Q&A takes place on Wednesday, March 7 at 9:30 p.m. at the Coral Gables Art Cinema.
