“He was 25 years old. He combed his hair like James Dean. She was 15. She took music lessons and could twirl a baton. For a while they lived together in a tree house. In 1959, she watched while he killed a lot of people.”
Based on the true story of the Charles Starkweather and Caril Fugate murders of 1958, Terrence Malick, in his debut film, bypasses the typical sensationalism in the murder genre to capture the story of Kit Carruthers (Martin Sheen) and Holly Sargis (Sissy Spacek) as they trek across the American landscape to the Montana Badlands, murdering along the way. Badlands is one of the most influential and central films in the 1970’s “Golden Age” of American filmmaking.
