Three Concerts From Apr 13th through 15th, 2007The Master Chorale of South Florida has scheduled three performances of Ein Deutsches Requiem by Johannes Brahms, accompanied by the Boca Raton Philharmonic Symphonia and soloists Joyce Guyer, soprano, and Keith Spencer, baritone. The work will be conducted by Master Chorale music director Dr. Jo-Michael Scheibe and sung in the original German. A staple of the chorale-orchestral repertoire worldwide, Brahms’ Requiem has not been performed by a professional organization in South Florida for many years. Brahms’ largest piece, the Requiem was intended to reflect the universal experience of life and grief. Rather than following the Catholic requiem for the dead, Brahms assembled his own text from the Bible as translated by Martin Luther. One of the masterpieces of classical choral literature, the Requiem takes the listener through an entire range of emotions that includes grief, resignation, tranquility, joy, hope and victory. Most listeners recognize the fourth movement, “How lovely is thy dwelling place (Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen),” which is sung by church choirs everywhere. The concerts will take place at 8:00 pm on Friday, April 13th, 2007, at Second Presbyterian Church, Fort Lauderdale; at 8:00 pm on Saturday, April 14th, 2007, in the new Kathryn Lindgren Theatre at Boca Raton Community High School; and at 4:00 pm on Sunday, April 15th, 2007, in Miami’s Trinity Episcopal Cathedral.
