A new Locust Projects initiative will increase exposure to contemporary art by commissioning works to be exhibited on billboards throughout Miami-Dade County, thanks to the support of The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
The Billboard Project, part of Locust Projects: Out of the Box (OOTB) program aims to challenge the billboard as a tool for commercial advertising while giving artists an opportunity to reconsider their own working methods.
The unique programming formula used to determine the shows at Locust Projects’ exhibition space will be applied to OOTB. The goal is to program conceptual exhibitions that are site-specific or experimental in nature, challenge expectation, and promote diversity. The Billboard Project will adopt the same process, choosing one international and one Miami-based artist to present artwork over the course of the two-year program.
In the fall of 2010, the inaugural Billboard Project will feature an internationally renowned artist. The 2011 billboards will be selected from an open call to Miami-based artists, providing them with the opportunity to participate in the locally conceived program.
The $100,000 Knight grant is part of the foundation’s Knight Arts Challenge, a $40 million initiative to bring together South Florida’s diverse community through the arts.
