Leiter Gallery. From June 15th through July 31st, 2006Leiter Gallery, a two story gallery space located in the Upper East side of Miami, is having the opening reception this Thursday June 15th at 7:00pm of Cachao and Friends, an impressive exhibition of photographs by award winning photojournalist, Carl Phillipe Juste honoring Mambo great ”Israel Cachao Lopez”. At the end of October, 1993, Cuban-born actor and filmmaker Andy Garcia, brought Cachao and a stellar collection of musicians into Capitol Studios in Los Angeles. That week of taping resulted in thirty songs, twelve of which were released as “Master Sessions Volume I”. The record was released along with the Garcia-directed 1992 concert film documentary “Cachao . . . Como Su Ritmo No Hay Dos (Cachao…Like His Rhythm There Is No Other), about the life of the co-creator of Mambo. The large photographs (Black and white and Tobacco stain, 30″ x 40″ and 34″ x 34” formats) reveal, in a bigger scale, the impeccable job done by Carl Phillipe Juste capturing perfect instances of some of those unforgettable moments. Juste, a staff photographer for the Herald since 1991, has been covering different stories ranging from Haiti to Afghanistan and Iraq. An admirer of Cachao, Juste gives us the opportunity to communicate with his art and at the same time to share his view regarding an exceptionally modest human being, a living legend and “to make people aware what it is to be truly in a presence of a king”. A limited quantity of photographs signed by Cachao will be available.
