From November 16 through 23, 2012.
The buzz of this year’s Cannes Film Festival (and Winner of the “Prix de la Jeunesse”), for both its madness and audacious brilliance, Holy Motors marks the triumphant return to the big screen of visionary French director Léos Carax (The Lovers on The Bridge, Mauvais Sang). Holy Motors has its exclusive Miami Premiere at the Coral Gables Art Cinema on Friday, November 16 with screenings continuing seven-days-a-week, in 2K Digital Cinema Projection.
The film stars Eva Mendes, Kylie Minogue and the chameleon-like, extraordinary Denis Lavant as Monsieur Oscar, a man chauffeured via limousine across Paris over the course of a single day. In a series of nine fantastical “appointments” Lavant transforms into new, unrecognizable characters that form the core of this surreal, funny, genre-hopping love-letter to the cinema that also transforms and explodes everything it touches.
Lavant’s star-turn as one of the most mischievously original screen protagonists in memory has him changing from a ninja warrior, to a gibberish-spewing troglodyte, to a shadowy assassin, and six other incarnations, in the dreamlike journey that makes up Holy Motors. It is also in a way a love letter to Paris, the City of Lights, with echoes of French cinemaʼs rich past in everything from the filmʼs casting to its stylistic elements, including a Kylie Minogue-sung musical number. Monster movie, film noir, romantic drama, musical, crime thriller, futuristic sex fantasy – Holy Motors is all of these and, then some. The New York Times raves it’s a “…work of great visual invention that reminds you just how drearily conventional many movies are…wonderfully, feels unlike anything else: it’s cinema reloaded.”
Gables Cinema Director Robert Rosenberg says, “This is one for the ages, and likely to excite and provoke South Florida audiences in equal measure – the spell it weaves grows on you and draws you in to a world with it’s own rules.”
Tickets for all screenings are $11.50 and under and are available for purchase in advance on the cinema’s website at www.gablescinema.com or in person at the box office during regular screening hours.
