A darkly comic story about one of the most influential filmmakers of the last century, the film follows Alfred Hitchcock, played by Anthony Hopkins, and his wife and partner Alma, played by Helne Mirren, during the course of making of Hitchcock’s seminal movie Psycho. The film is directed by Sacha Gervasi, who is acclaimed for his previous documentary Anvil: The Story of Anvil, and was a writer of The Terminal and Henry’s Crime. It is based on Stephen Rebello’s book Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho.
Hitchcock explores the filmmaker’s struggle to get his, for the time period, edgy movie Psycho financed and completed, and the relationship between the iconic filmmaker with his wife of 53 years. Hitchcock was known for obsessing over his much younger leading ladies, who were invariably classic blondes. “I think Alma accepts Hitch for exactly who he is and knows his idiosyncrasies and his crazy predilections,” says Gervasi. “Their marriage is absolutely touched off by his increasing obsessions with these women, but they were ultimately fantasy relationships.’ Hopkins and Mirren are joined in Hitchcock by a stellar cast that includes Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh, recreating the filming of one of the most notorious shower scenes in film history; Jessica Biel as Vera Miles, the level-headed heroine; and James D’Arcy as Anthony Perkins, along with Toni Collete as Peggy Robertson, Hitchcock’s assistant.
