Photographer H. Allen Benowitz opens this month his most recent exhibit “The Cars of Cuba” a benefit in honor of “World AIDS Day at the Borinquen HC Art Project, located at 100 NE 38th Street in the Miami Design District. Recently, WLRN’s ArtStreet Project featured the cultural photographer on Monday, November 15, 18, and 20, 2010. The biographical Look “Into The Lens of Photographer H. Allen Benowitz” interview featured photographs from Cuba, Morocco, India, and other parts of the world.
Mr. Benowitz has received numerous honors and awards. His highly acclaimed photo, “Behind the Wall,” received national recognition at Holland & Knight Charitable Foundation’s Holocaust Remembrance Project Awards Dinner in Washington, D. C. Recognition for Benowitz’s photography include a Judges’ Award at the UM Lowe Art Museum’s Beaux Arts Festival; honorable mention in the International Kodak Contest; award winner B/W photography, One Ear Society; juried exhibitions at the Coconut Grove Art Festival, Beaux Arts Festival, Books & Books, Coral Gables, FL, and others. Among numerous publications in which he has been featured and appeared are the ARTnews, Miami Monthly Magazine, The Andrews Journal, the Cherokee Scout, The Journal of Court Reporting, Miami Snow Ski Club Magazine, Miami Art Guide, and Coastal Elegance & Wealth Magazine. His photo subjects include Landscape, Wildlife, People, Adventure Travel, and Architecture. Solo exhibitions include the Coconut Grove Art Festival Gallery; Rosen Museum Gallery, Boca Raton; retrospective at the Espirito Santo-Conrad Hotel, Miami; Miami Art Space, Wynwood; Darby Technologies, Coral Gables, FL.
Mr. Benowitz’s exhibitions in North Carolina were at The Design Gallery in Burnsville, on the Blue Ridge Parkway at the Altapass Orchard in Little Switzerland, and the Andrews Art Museum in Cherokee County. In 2008, Mr. Benowitz returned from Cuba on a humanitarian mission where he photographed “Life in Cuba 2008” during the “10th Anniversary of Castro’s Five-Year Plan.” This occurred shortly before Hurricanes Gustav and Ike wreaked their havoc on the people of Cuba. His pre-storm photographs have preserved the impoverished state of this beautiful little island on film. Soon to be released will be his new work from the Pyrenees of southwestern France.
H. Allen Benowitz was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. He graduated from the Interboro Institute of Business, Manhattan. A self-taught photographer, he lives in Miami and spends time with his wife, Jo, at their log home in Burnsville, NC.
