Modern Paintings and Decorative Arts. The 20th Century Design Gallery, located at 5050 Biscayne Blvd in Miami, is exhibiting paintings by Pedro Friedeberg, an artist born in Florence, Italy who now lives and works in Guanajuato, Mexico. During World War II in 1940, Pedro and his mother immigrated to Mexico. In 1956, he entered Universidad Iberoamerica to study architecture and art under Mathias Goeritz. He was very much influenced by the Surrealistic movement of the times. He creates an endless surrealistic space filled with a multitude of religious, occult classical and astrological symbols and characters in his paintings, sculpture and furniture.
Besides Friedeberg, the gallery has also works by Mario Bencomo, Agustin Fernandez, and Cundo Bermudez. Well known for their wide array of fine mid-century period furnishings, art and lighting, the owners Rene Estevez and Tom Hutchison also specialize in Scandinavian and Italian pottery and glass and mid-century studio pottery by artists such as James McKinnell and Karen Karnes.
