Carnival Center for the Performing Arts March 30th, 2007Singer-songwriter Gilberto Gil, who represents the best of Brazilian culture, is returning to the stage as a performer after serving as Brazil’s Minister of Culture since 2003, with a rare solo concert at Carnival Center in downtown Miami on Friday, March 30th, 2007 at 8:00 p.m. Since co-founding the explosive Tropicalia movement of the late 1960s, Gil has remained at the forefront of Brazilian popular culture. For nearly 40 years, Gil has invented, innovated and reprocessed groundbreaking music. From the young bossa-nova musician, to the groundbreaker of the electric 1960s, to the artist who made a perfect fusion between Brazil and Jamaican reggae and the pop star who embraced rock music and electronica, Gil’s music has encompassed everything from baião and samba to MPB, rock, reggae, afoxé, and axé. His strength lies in his inclusive, all-encompassing nature. Now returning to the world’s stages, he is presenting the new Luminoso tour, a solo project featuring Gill and his guitar. Since his last performance in Miami as a musician in 2000, he has been awarded countless accolades, including Unesco Artist for Peace, last month’s Polar Music Prize from King Gustav of Sweden, which is informally known as the Nobel Prize of music; the Premio Extremadura a la Criación 2005, in Spain, for Best Latin American Artist, the Latin Grammy® Man of the Year in 2003, and several Grammy® awards for his recordings.
