The first edition of the Miami / Miami Beach Sculpture Biennial will be hosted by Gary Nader. An Important selection of sculptures ranging from medium to monumental scale and featuring works by world-class modern and contemporary artists, will be prominently displayed along the Biscayne Boulevard corridor in downtown Miami,from the Intercontinental Hotel to the American Airlines Arena, and in nearby indoor venues.
The principal objective of the Biennial is to celebrate the importance of sculpture in contemporary civic life. Though a young metropolis, Miami and Miami Beach are already blessed with a rich history when it comes to sculpture and art in public spaces. Many of the works on display will come from local art dealers and collections. The scale and importance of these works affirms what is often overlooked—Miami’s commitment to an art of substance and permanence, an art which measures its relevance in centuries and not in seasons. To highlight this legacy, the Biennial will produce a video to be displayed at one of the indoor venues, that surveys the prominence of art in South Florida public and corporate spaces. “Miami Monumental” will be one of the Biennial’s themes, in tribute to our city’s cosmopolitan culture focused on art that revels in its enduring relevance to the public. Indeed, the Biennial encourages the continuing expansion of this legacy across Miami-Dade County as part of our unshaken commitment to the present and future enrichment of our unique urban environment. In charge of the final selection of sculptures to be included in the Biennial will be the newly appointed curator, Ricardo Pau-Llosa, an internationally known critic, curator, and writer.
Under the direction of Gary Nader, Producer, the Biennial will showcase artwork from all over the world and embodying a wide range of aesthetic and stylistic perspectives. Already confirmed will be works by such artists as: Ahmed-Al-Bahrani (Iraq), Pablo Atchugarry (Uruguay), Bernar Venet (France), Fernando Botero (Colombia), Agustin Cardenas (Cuba), John Chamberlain (USA), Sandro Chia (Italy), Carlos Cruz Diez (Venezuela), Stephen De Staebler (USA), Olafur Eliasson (Denmark), John Henry (USA), Thomas Houseago (UK), Richard Hudson (UK), Robert Indiana (USA), Thomas Kiesewetter (Germany), Martin Kippenberger (Germany), Julio Larraz (Cuba), Roy Fox Lichtenstein (USA), Javier Marín (Mexico), Enrique Martinez Celaya (Cuba), Paul McCarthy (USA), Henry Moore (UK), Edgar Negret (Colombia), Mimo Paldino (Italy), Arnaldo Pomodoro (Italy), Hugo Schiaffino (Mexico), Jesús Rafael Soto (Venezuela), Frank Stella (USA), Ruby Sterling (USA), Rufino Tamayo (Mexico), Manolo Valdez (Spain), Sophia Vari (Greece), Christopher Yockey (USA), Francisco Zuniga (Costa Rica), among others. The Biennial exhibition will be open and accessibility to the public will be free. It will include didactic materials that will enhance the general public’s appreciation of the works on display.
