Gary Nader Fine Art

Buy American…Masters. Through March 2009.   Gary Nader Fine Art. Miami GalleriesThe exhibition Buy American…Masters at Gary Nader Fine Art is intended to pursue the concept of Buy America, promoting the preference for domestically produced goods and the idea that “Made in America matters" by showcasing a selection of important works by some of the most influential Modern and Contemporary American artists: Basquiat, Chamberlain, Condo, De Stabler, Francis, Goldin, Henri, Indiana, Katz, Lichtenstein, Rauschenberg, Rosenquist, Salle, Stella, Warhol, Wasselmann, among others. The show also focuses in their formal and conceptual nexus and the impromptus of their aesthetic discourses on the rest of the art world.

Basquiat’s lasting Neo-expressionist creative influence is immediately recognizable in the work of subsequent artists, in particular some of his techniques and insights. Warhol's extensive career and influential work as a Pop and Conceptual Artist; Rauschenberg transition from Abstract Expressionism to Pop Art and his approached to non-traditional materials and objects in innovative combinations as well as his work as photographer, printmaking, papermaking, and performance. Frank Stella’s changeover from the minimalistic and abstract canvases to the full three-dimensionality of his sculptural forms derived from architectural elements. Indiana's bold and simple iconic images and his best known examples LOVE and HOPE considered emblems of the 20th century art and particularly the Pop Art.  Lichtenstein brilliantly moves contemporary sculpture into a new dominion with his non-literary and non-narrative modus operandi, yet highly formalized thru his brushstroke paintings of the 1960's, and then again in the sculptures of the 1980's, playfully mimics the seriousness of abstract expressionism and the almost holy quality that the stroke and “painterliness” of the artist had come to encompass in the years preceding Pop art.

Gary Nader Fine Art

By Dinorah Perez Rementeria

1Sometimes the display of artworks might be tricky. On the one hand, it is not an easy task to choose only a few samples – from a very good collection – if there are uncountable valuable pieces on the waiting list. On the other hand, the selection criteria must rely as well on the characteristics of the space, the kind of audience visiting the gallery and the real intention (purpose, meaning) of the show.

Gary Nader Fine Art presents four simultaneous exhibitions featuring the art of Pablo Picasso, Fernando Botero, Frank Stella and Guillermo Muñoz Vera. Will there be any piece that we haven’t seen so far? Will there be anything surprising at the curatorial level? That is the hope, for the Miami audiences can’t wait to see what bridges and connects these great artists’ bodies of work.

Sculptures and paintings rescued from the gallery storage will be shown to the public starting December 4th through January, 2008.

At first sight, Gary Nader Fine Art gives the impression to be a museum rather than a gallery. Botero’s huge bronze sculptures placed outdoors have become the collection’s distinctive mark. Inside, there is also plenty of room for great scale works by Matta, Muñoz Vera, Wifredo Lam, Guillermo Kuitca, among others. Art pieces can be found either in restrooms, narrow corridors, or in the kitchen.

However, what is really remarkable about this space is the sense of quietness, a deep tranquility which helps one to perceive details that otherwise may be overlooked. Very often, the spectator needs that sort of peacefulness to approach an artwork, mostly if they are abstract paintings or sculptures.

Generally, the spectators happen to be very familiar with at least three of the artists featured here. For instance, Botero’s overweighed depictions are easily recognizable within the Latin-American culture while the abstract / cubist style of Picasso has been deeply venerated around the globe.

In the same way, Stella’s minimal sculptures haven’t passed unnoticed in the English speaking world. What can be done to make the public see, comprehend this art – that has been thoroughly spread – from a new perspective? What strategies can be implemented to pull them in the space? Although some of these pieces may have been seen infinite times, it depends on the curatorial scheme whether the spectators engage or not in the discourse of the show.

For example, while the concept of playing with volume is considered as a key element in Botero’s work, his large statues reach a contemporary and international dimension questioning issues like obesity, heaviness, and beauty standards, which profoundly affect people nowadays. Similar interstices give one the occasion to interact with the so-called “art of the masters” on a more personal basis.
