Gallery Diet presents the first Miami solo exhibition of Brooklyn based designer Katie Stout. Katie’s designs are inspired by the desire to project soft absurdity into domestic environments. Ideas fluctuate within the context of a characterized home with an underlying theme of softness: rugs, beanbags, curvy silhouettes, and shagginess. She uses materials that were once soft and are now hard in ceramic lamps and paper pulp stools. She celebrates and subtly questions the purpose of the pieces by creating stuffed, prepubescent versions each piece of furniture. Together the pieces create a sweetly perverse domicile. Ordinary furniture is turned on its head and pokes fun at the idealized concept of home. Katie allows for the individual furniture objects to become something other than what they are conventionally understood to be.
Katie Stout is a graduate of RISD, her work has been exhibited at Design Miami, Miami, Design Miami/Basel and numerous other venues around the world. She was recently featured as a “designer to keep your eye on” by Dwell Magazine and was featured in the 2013 design issue of the NY Times style magazine, she was also commissioned by Bjarne Melgaard to create the furniture for his recent Whitney Biennial installation. Katie’s work was included in the 2014 exhibition Great Expectations at the home of Nina Johnson-Milewski and Daniel Milewski.
In the projects room: Michael Clifford, Playing Hands

Alongside the work of Katie Stout, Gallery Diet presents Playing Hands by Miami-based painter Michael Clifford, in the gallery projects room. Incidental, laboriously quick, and preciously considered, Clifford’s work is executed with levity, amassing elements of sexuality, loss, and sentimentality.
Clifford investigates abstract mark making through the implementation of symbols.The notions in the symbols become bittersweet in their familiarity, yet are rooted in faint memory. About Michael Clifford
