Lélia Mordoch’s Miami gallery is currently showcasing works by “the alchemist of the light”, Argentinean artist Julio Le Parc.
Julio Le Parc, was born in 1928 in Mendoza, Argentina. From 1943 to 1946 he attended the night courses at the School of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires where he met the Concrete Art group and Lucio Fontana who bought one of Le Parc´s drawings. Due to a French scholarship, the artist arrived in Paris in 1958 and visited Vasarely. Along with García Rossi, Morellet, Sobrino, Stein and Yvaral, he founded GRAV (Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel, 1960-1968) and since then he lives and works in Paris.
As part of his ongoing search on the surface, geometrical shapes and a meticulous order, Le Parc has created since 1959 his experimentation work with movement and light. In 1963, he made the first penetrable of Labrynth in conjunction with GRAV for the Third Paris Biennial. In 1966 he had his first solo exhibition in New York City and obtained the Great International Painting Award at the Venice Biennial.
Le Parc exhibits his work in Paris, at the Kinetic Art Gallery Denise René. He held his first retrospective in 1972 at the Kunsthalle in Dusseldorf. Then he had successive exhibitions and retrospective shows in Madrid, Bilbao, Barcelona (1978), in Caracas (1981), in Mendoza and in Chile (1989), at the MoMA in New York (1993), at Magasin de Grenoble with GRAV (1998), at the Daros Latinamerica, in Zurich (2005), at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in New York (2008), at the Pompidou Center in Paris where a whole exhibition room was consecrated to GRAV within the ingoing exhibition program of its collection (2010) through the artist’s participation in the exhibition “Suprasensorial: Experiments with Light, Color and Space” from December 12th, 2010 to February 27, 2011 which will be held at MOCA in Los Angeles.
Since the 1990´s Lelia Mordoch regularly presents the work of the artists of GRAV in solo shows and group shows in art fairs in Paris, Milano, Caracas and Miami. For the 2009 Art Paris fair the gallery features a personal exhibition of works by Le Parc under the glass roof of the Grand Palais after the solo show of the artist’s works held at Lelia Mordoch Gallery in 2008.
For this new exhibition in Miami, Julio Le Parc features a major installation created for his most recent commission in Buenos Aires, as well as the light boxes of the 1960s, mobiles and large format paintings from the Alchemy and Modulation series (1970-2000).
