Colony Theatre. June 14, 2013, 8:30 p.m.
As a result of the reorganization of the Cuban economy, a new character bursts into the national scene: the entrepreneur. She’s optimistic and funny!
Yara La China (Chinese Yara) has three licenses and all the necessary protection: a photo of Fidel and Raul, and an Indian who can counteract witchery and spells. Yara offers excursion packages payable in the two existing Cuban currencies, and gives advise on strategies to recover what has been spent.
To travel with her to Varadero, Viñales, Trinidad or Santiago de Cuba is always an investment. Her offer is unique, a bargain. To illustrate her itineraries she’s chosen a fragmented map of the island: Her business is the country itself, and her potential clients are the Cuban pedestrians themselves; an incisive and ironic joke, showing a reality where to take any action is impossible for the large majority, who are victims of the dual currency and the meager salaries.
