Free Family Fun Day Highlights Japanese Traditions

November 10, 2012. 12:00 – 5:00 p.m.

“Japanese Traditions” is the theme of a Family Fun Day at HistoryMiami on Saturday, November 10. Visitors will join South Florida Folklife Center artist-in-residence Mieko Kubota for a celebration of Japanese arts, crafts and culture from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. The event is free to the public.

The day’s activities will include Japanese taiko drumming by Fushu Daiko, the candy artistry of Candy Miyuki, a regular performer at the Japan Pavilion of Epcot at Walt Disney World Resort, and craft stations for ikebana (flower arranging), origami (paper folding), calligraphy and much more! You can also try Japanese video games and check out a manga presentation at the nearby Miami-Dade County Main Library.

Mieko Kubota is a master ikebana artist with over fifty years of experience. She creates flower arrangements that both adhere to tradition and reflect modern sensibilities. Mieko is a former president of the Miami chapter of Ikebana International and winner of the Florida Folk Heritage Award in 2010. She is originally from Japan.

This Family Fun Day is made possible with the support of the Consulate-General of Japan in Miami, the Knight Foundation, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the National Endowment for the Arts, the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture, the Florida Humanities Council, the Michael and Diane Rosenberg Foundation, the Carnival Corporation PLC and Miami-Dade County.
